The 2022 MLB draft is just 48 hours away! Since my last mock, there have been two big updates— Atlanta acquired the 35th pick from Kansas City, and UConn left-hander Reggie Crawford announced his plans to transfer to Tennessee, making him largely unsignable considering his injury history.
The top 17 picks remain the same, but the dominoes start to fall after that.
1. Baltimore- Druw Jones, OF, Wesleyan HS (GA)
2. Arizona- Elijah Green, OF, IMG Academy (FL)
3. Texas- Jackson Holliday, SS, Stillwater HS (OK)
4. Pittsburgh- Brooks Lee, SS, Cal Poly
5. Washington- Kevin Parada, C, Georgia Tech
6. Miami- Termarr Johnson, 2B, Mays HS (GA)
7. Chi Cubs- Cam Collier, 3B, Chipola JC (FL)
8. Minnesota- Jace Jung, 2B, Texas Tech
9. Kansas City- Justin Crawford, OF, Bishop Gorman HS (NV)
10. Colorado- Jacob Berry, 1B/OF, LSU
11. NY Mets- Gavin Cross, OF, Virginia Tech
12. Detroit- Zach Neto, SS, Campbell
13. LA Angels- Cooper Hjerpe, LHP, Oregon State
14. NY Mets- Brock Porter, RHP, St. Mary Prep (MI)
15. San Diego- Jett Williams, SS, Rockwall-Heath HS (TX)
16. Cleveland- Cole Young, SS, North Allegheny HS (PA)
17. Philadelphia- Gabriel Hughes, RHP, Gonzaga
18. Cincinnati- Brandon Barriera, LHP, American Heritage HS (FL)
Previous pick- Peyton Graham
With the Braves adding some bonus pool money, they can steal Lesko out from under Cincinnati, forcing the Reds to target a different prep arm.
19. Oakland- Drew Gilbert, OF, Tennessee
20. Atlanta- Daniel Susac, C, Arizona
Previous pick- Connor Prielipp
If Atlanta can float Dylan Lesko down to 35, they probably go with a cheaper option here than Prielipp.
21. Seattle- Justin Campbell, RHP, Oklahoma State
22. St. Louis- Connor Prielipp, LHP, Alabama
Previous pick- Tucker Toman
I like the Toman fit, but Prielipp being available definitely changes things.
23. Toronto- Chase DeLauter, OF, James Madison
24. Boston- Jordan Beck, OF, Tennessee
25. NY Yankees- Spencer Jones, 1B/OF, Vanderbilt
Previous pick- Daniel Susac
Susac is off the board, but college bat will likely still be the pick. Jones has been linked heavily to the Yankees.
26. Chi Sox- Tucker Toman, 3B, Hammond HS (SC)
Previous pick- Blade Tidwell
With Toman falling into Chicago’s lap, the White Sox can wait on a college arm.
27. Milwaukee- Blade Tidwell, RHP, Tennessee
Previous pick- Thomas Harrington
The domino effect continues, as Tidwell presents more upside than Harrington.
28. Houston- Carson Whisenhunt, LHP, East Carolina
29. Tampa Bay- Eric Brown, SS, Coastal Carolina
30. San Francisco- Dylan Beavers, OF, California
31. Colorado- Kumar Rocker, RHP, Tri-City
Previous pick- Brandon Barriera
Barriera is off the board, and Kansas City no longer has the 35th pick— where I previously mocked Rocker.
32. Cincinnati- Peyton Graham, SS/3B, Oklahoma
Previous pick- Dylan Lesko
With a non-Lesko arm already in the fold, Cincinnati still gets its guy in Graham without the need to go under slot.
33. Baltimore- Jud Fabian, OF, Florida
34. Arizona- Jackson Ferris, LHP, IMG Academy (FL)
35. Atlanta- Dylan Lesko, RHP, Buford HS (GA)
Previous pick- Kumar Rocker (by Kansas City)
Atlanta has the money to entice the local kid to sign away from his Vanderbilt commitment.
36. Pittsburgh- Jacob Miller, RHP, Liberty Union HS (OH)
37. Cleveland- Thomas Harrington, RHP, Campbell
Previous pick- Jonathan Cannon
Harrington, a potential option for Cleveland at 16, now falls into its lap at 37.
38. Colorado- Robby Snelling, LHP, McQueen HS (NV)
Previous pick- Landon Sims
Having taken a college-aged arm at 31, Colorado can grab an exciting prep pitcher here.
39. San Diego- Noah Schultz, LHP, Oswego East HS (IL)
40. LA Dodgers- Cayden Wallace, 3B/OF, Arkansas
Previous pick- Spencer Jones
I had Wallace in the mix for this pick originally, and now he makes sense with Jones off the board.
41. Boston- Hunter Barco, LHP, Florida
42. Baltimore- Peyton Pallette, RHP, Arkansas
43. Arizona- Cade Doughty, 3B, LSU
Previous pick- Cayden Wallace
With Wallace gone, Doughty is the next best college infielder.
44. Pittsburgh- Jacob Melton, OF, Oregon State
45. Washington- Cade Horton, RHP, Oklahoma
46. Miami- Owen Murphy, RHP, Riverside Brookfield HS (IL)
Previous pick- Robby Snelling
With Snelling gone, Miami dips in the midwest for the next best prep arm.
47. Chi Cubs- Landon Sims, RHP, Mississippi State
Previous pick- Adam Mazur
Mazur is a good fit here, but Sims’ talent is too great to pass on this late.
48. Minnesota- Dalton Rushing, C, Louisville
49. Kansas City- Walter Ford, RHP, Pace HS (FL)
50. Colorado- Max Wagner, 3B, Clemson
Previous pick- Cade Doughty
Wagner is next in the pecking order among college third baseman.
51. Detroit- Cole Phillips, RHP, Boerne HS (TX)
Previous pick- Owen Murphy
Murphy is off the board, so Phillips jumps into this spot.
52. NY Mets- Gavin Turley, OF, Hamilton HS (AZ)
53. San Diego- Brock Jones, OF, Stanford
54. Cleveland- Jonathan Cannon, RHP, Georgia
Previous pick- Parker Messick
Cleveland is still able to land Cannon later on, pairing him with Harrington.
55. Cincinnati- Sterlin Thompson, OF, Florida
56. Oakland- Henry Bolte, OF, Palo Alto HS (CA)
57. Atlanta- Parker Messick, LHP, Florida State
Previous pick- Max Wagner
Having passed on Prielipp to pay for Lesko, the Braves go with a higher floor college lefty.
58. Seattle- Mikey Romero, SS, Orange Lutheran HS (CA)
59. St. Louis- Ryan Clifford, OF, Pro5 Academy (NC)
Previous pick- Jake Bennett
Having gone with a college arm in Round 1, the Cardinals pivot to the top prep bat on the board.
60. Toronto- Jaden Noot, RHP, Sierra Canyon HS (CA)
Previous pick- Cole Phillips
Noot, who has the size and velocity Toronto typically targets, jumps into the second round with Phillips off the board.
61. NY Yankees- JT Ritchie, RHP, Bainbridge HS (WA)
62. Chi Sox- Adam Mazur, RHP, Iowa
Previous pick- Ryan Clifford
By going the prep route in the first round, Chicago is able to land a very exciting college arm here.
63. Milwaukee- Logan Tanner, C, Mississippi State
64. Houston- Tanner Schobel, SS, Virginia Tech
65. Tampa Bay- Tristan Smith, LHP, Boiling Springs HS (SC)
66. San Francisco- Jake Bennett, LHP, Oklahoma
Previous pick- Reggie Crawford
Crawford may be too expensive to lure away from a transfer to Tennessee, and a cheaper lefty with more track record falls to the Giants.
67. Baltimore- Jackson Cox, RHP, Toutle Lake HS (WA)
68. Minnesota- Jacob Zibin, TNXL Academy (FL)
69. Oakland- Drew Thorpe, RHP, Cal Poly
70. Tampa Bay- Trystan Vrieling, RHP, Gonzaga
71. Tampa Bay- William Kempner, RHP, Gonzaga
72. Milwaukee- Ivan Melendez, 1B, Texas
73. Cincinnati- Brandon Sproat, RHP, Florida
74. Seattle- Robert Moore, 2B, Arkansas
